High-School Sweethearts | How did we meet?
In 2008, our fairy-tale story began as high-school sweethearts, he was a sport enthusiast and I was a cheerleading captain. Sharing the sports field and our inability to keep our eyes off each other left us inseparable off and on the pitch. On May 23rd, 2008 it was made official when we started dating and so the adventure began from going to each other’s Matric dances to the same University, graduating and then becoming a part of the real working class.
What really stood out when you decided to choose Oxbow as your wedding venue?
Choosing a wedding venue was really hard. It involved endless soul searching and countless hours on the internet trying to find the perfect venue. Eloping and getting married in a Cathedral in Portugal began to cross my mind. Thankfully, one day I resorted to searching on Pinterest to look at other couple’s wedding venues and there it was, Oxbow Country Estate. We got married in May in the White Garden Pavilion at Oxbow which was most certainly the setting for a fairy-tale wedding. The pavilion overlooks a lake and a view into the distance, with cascading willow trees and an afternoon sunset. I have to also mention the staircase, for all brides to make a grand entrance. It makes you feel even more special and beautiful and I will never forget walking down with my father. What I liked most about Oxbow is that it’s a venue which is the perfect indoor and outdoor chic venue and they serve multiple options for five-star set menu’s. Our guests couldn’t stop talking about the food and I quote: “It was the best food they have ever tasted”. A must for us was also to find a venue that has accommodation for my big family and my even bigger Portuguese family. Oxbow was there to save the day, with enough rooms for everyone. If I could get married again, I would pick Oxbow Country Estate and I’m sure all my guests would agree.
What was your inspiration for your colour scheme and décor?
I love very classical neutral tones and my favourite colour palette is lots of white and shades of grey. I was very hands-on and my Maid of honour called me DIY Queen, from our Save-The-Dates, Invitations, Menu’s, Setting Arrangement, Welcome Signs, Our Personalised Wedding Sign, Guest Book, Guest Gift Champagne Bottles – the list goes on.
Can you take us on the journey of your wedding day?
Our fairy-tale wedding began on the 26thMay 2018, at 07:30, we arrived really early to add the finishing touches to the venue. I had the most incredible wedding coordinator, TJ, who made sure I didn’t have to worry about a thing, except ‘drinking Champagne of course and loads of it darling!’. I had a stylist doing my hair and make-up and this gave me time to go through my wedding vows again. I had a lot of nerves and excitement but most of all joy and happiness. The hours flew by and I was ready to walk down the aisle.
Surprisingly, I was ready to go at 15h00 sharp, I wanted to be punctual and not let my fiancé wait longer than a minute. I remember my dad coming to see me and holding back the tears when he saw me. He looked handsome too and I was so blessed to have him walk me down the aisle. My bridesmaids and I walked to Ellie Goulding “How long will I love you’” no emotion can express what he was feeling inside when he saw me coming down the aisle, tears came rolling down his face. Once the ceremony commenced, we exchanged vows, said our ‘I dos’, sealed it with a kiss and we were officially husband and wife. It honestly didn’t feel real.
After the ceremony, we cut our cake before setting off into the sunset for our couple shoot with the photographer. Our guests then enjoyed some canapes, cake, a sweet table with wedding biscuits alongside with some refreshing spritzers and the soothing sound of our background music to the live singer, Emil Struwig. He was honestly amazing!
The MC welcomed us into the room to Rita Ora “For You”, our guests cheered and clapped. The Reception blew us away and left us breathless with the beautiful tall candelabra’s on every alternative table as well as the tall bowtie vases with round pom poms of flowers (a mixture of orchid’s, roses, daisies and all white flowers). In this moment, everything I could have ever dreamed of our wedding looking like, came to life. It was magical, and we felt so blessed to have everyone we love sitting right before us whilst they share this special day with us.
Our evening could not be more heart-warming than an amuse bouche for all our guests followed by the most delicious 3-course gourmet dinner by the Chef based on our chosen menu. Our guests were honestly blown away when the waiters surprised each one of them by lifting off the cloche from their main meal. To accompany the decadent food was wine and champagne with some interludes of various toasts and speeches that had a few tears and laughter. Our guests then enjoyed a Trio of Dessert which ensured that they would have a sugar rush enough to keep them dancing until 24h00. But first, the newlyweds ‘Mr and Mrs Sequeira’ opened the dance floor with their first dance. We enjoyed every minute of our 5-minute dance to the song by Nathan Sykes ‘Over and Over Again’.
I wish that our wedding day and night could last forever, but all good things must come to an end, honestly had a fairy-tale wedding and wouldn’t change a thing.
What are some of your favourite pieces of advice you would like to share with other brides and grooms?
For the Bride, you don’t have to be a “Bridezilla” to get things done, you just have to plan a bit in advance. Rather start things early because it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Remember your Bridesmaids and the people around you are there to help, so you can put them to good use during this time. Generally, a lot of newly engaged couples face interruptions and very opinionated family members that feel that they have a say in your big day. We experienced that exact problem, but our strong-will made sure that everyone’s opinions did not rule what we wanted. Acknowledge your family’s thoughts because they may just be excited for your big day as you are but at the same time you do not need to stand by it, if you are not for it. This is your time to shine, beautiful girl and for your love with your partner to grow stronger with every passing day and to flourish into something more amazing than what you have already have.
For the Groom, as a ‘soon-to-be-hubby’ make sure that you take initiative but do not think that you must take charge. Also, making sure that your wedding day runs seamlessly is an art all on its own especially how you imagine it to be in your mind. I just want to say again, if you are looking for the perfect wedding venue I would honestly recommend Oxbow Country Estate and if you are looking for the perfect wedding co-ordinator then TJ is most certainly that person. I can’t thank you enough
